Austenitic stainless steels: |
| |
|
Austenitic stainless steels containing chromium and nickel as the principal alloying elements are identified as 300 Series. Austenitic stainless steels containing chromium, nickel, and manganese are identified as 200 Series. |

Austenitic stainless steel welding considerations: |
|
|
|
When welding austenitic stainless steels, they have several characteristics that require some revision of welding procedures that are considered standard for mild carbon steels. |
|
|
(a) |
The electrical resistance of austenitic stainless steel is higher than that of mild carbon steel so less electrical curent (lower heat settings) is required for welding. |
|
|
(b) |
The melting point of the austenitic stainless steel is lower, so less heat is required to produce fusion for welding. |
|
|
(c) |
The austenitic stainless steels have a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity, which causes a tendency for heat to concentrate in a small zone adjacent to the weld. |
|
|
(d) |
The austenitic stainless steels also have coefficients of thermal expansion approximately 50% greater than mild steel, which calls for more attention to the control of warpage and distortion. |
